Indian wedding invitation wording in English

By Nimantran · Updated 19 October 2026

Most Indian wedding invitations in English follow the same pattern: a blessing, the hosts, the couple, the date and place, then the events. Here are samples for each kind of host, plus the schedule, RSVP and dress code lines. Copy one and change the highlighted details.

The parts of an Indian wedding invitation

  1. A blessing: "With the blessings of Lord Ganesha" or "With the blessings of our elders".
  2. The hosts: usually the parents, sometimes the grandparents or the couple.
  3. The request: "request the honour of your presence" or "invite you and your family".
  4. The couple, with the other family's names under the other partner.
  5. The date, time and venue of the main ceremony.
  6. The schedule of the other functions, then RSVP and notes.

Wording tips

  • Use one style for titles: "Mr. & Mrs." or "Shri & Smt.", not both.
  • Write the day with the date ("Saturday, 5 December 2026") and times as "7:30 pm". For guests abroad, add "IST".
  • Use full names in the formal wording and first names in short messages.
  • If the muhurat matters, give the time of the pheras so elders can come for it.
  • Need it in Hindi too? See the Hindi wedding card matter. Every Nimantran design switches between English and हिन्दी.

Questions

Who is named first on an Indian wedding invitation?

The family that hosts. On the bride's family's card, her parents invite and her name comes first. On the groom's family's card, his name comes first.

Should the invitation be in English or Hindi?

Many families send both: English for friends and colleagues, Hindi for elders. A digital invitation can hold both, with a switch between them.

How early should we send wedding invitations?

Send the invitation 4 to 6 weeks before the wedding, and a save the date 3 to 6 months before if guests need to travel. Send a short reminder a day or two before.

Is "request the honour of your presence" right for an Indian wedding?

Yes. It is the formal line for the wedding ceremony itself. "Request the pleasure of your company" is used for receptions and parties. Most Indian cards use either one.
