Maithili and Bihari wedding card, in Madhubani

By Nimantran · Updated 26 October 2026

A Maithili and Bihari wedding card online, painted in Madhubani. Guests look into a village-fair bioscope and turn its crank, and a painted strip rolls past the brass eyepiece, one picture per ritual, from Sumangali and Matkor to Kohbar, Sindurdaan and Chaturthi. It opens in Hindi, to shehnai and nagada, and you send it as one link.

A Maithili wedding card inside a bioscope

The Mithila Bioscope design is the painted tin peep-show box that came to every mela. It opens at dusk at the fair, with the bioscope-wala’s call painted at the top, आउ, देखू — मिथिलाक बियाह!, and a yellow ticket with your names. The guest taps, the stub tears off, the lotus lid over the eyepiece swings open and the view zooms in.

Then the guest turns the crank: one full turn is one picture. A swipe on the eyepiece or the arrow keys also move the strip, with a projector flicker while it runs. When it stops, that chapter’s details slide out on a painted signboard. A row of paper tickets under the box is the index: tap one to roll straight to it. On a laptop the whole box stands at the mela, with a giant wheel, bunting and a string of bulbs.

  • Madhubani pictures drawn for this design: fish, parrots, lotuses, an elephant baraat, the kohbar, the sindoor box.
  • Music: shehnai, nagada and harmonium in Raag Pilu.
  • A live countdown to the Sindurdaan.
  • Directions and add to calendar for each ritual, with its dress code (पहिरन) in colour swatches.
  • Photos and a film, notes for guests, and RSVP on WhatsApp.

The Maithil wedding rituals, in order

The sample is Vaidehi Mishra of Rajnagar, Madhubani, and Anirudh Jha of Laheriasarai, Darbhanga. Their strip has these pictures:

  1. Sumangali: the married women of the tol bless the bride with sindoor and dhaan-doob and sing the first wedding songs.
  2. Matkor: at sunrise the women walk with drums to the pokhar and dig the first holy earth.
  3. Haldi (हरदि): turmeric, mustard oil and gram flour, and nobody stays clean.
  4. Kohbar: the women paint the kohbar ghar, and every guest paints one fish.
  5. Baraat & Parichhan: the groom arrives in a red Mithila paag, and the bride’s mother welcomes him with a lamp, doob, rice and curd.
  6. Kanyadan: in a mandap of bamboo and mango leaves, with lava offered to the fire.
  7. Sindurdaan: the groom fills the bride’s parting with sindoor from a carved Mithila sindoor box.
  8. Chaturthi: on the fourth day the couple come out of the kohbar, and everyone eats dahi-chura and makhana.

Questions

Is the Maithili wedding card in Maithili or Hindi?

It opens in Hindi, and one tap switches it to English (or to up to three of ten Indian languages). Each ritual’s Maithili name is painted on its picture, like मटकोर, हरदि and बरियाती · परिछन, and the bioscope-wala calls out in Maithili on the first screen. A full page of text in Maithili is not one of those languages.

Does it work for a Bhojpuri or Magahi wedding too?

Yes. Rename, remove or add any ritual, like the Tilak. Each one gets a Madhubani picture: the design picks it by the ritual’s name, and a ritual it has no picture for gets the closest one by its kind.

How much does the Bihari wedding card cost?

It is made to order by our studio, so the price depends on your wedding. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates for a quote.

How do guests reply?

The last picture, a parrot flying with a letter over the lotus pond, opens the RSVP. Guests pick the events they will join and send it on WhatsApp to the number you choose.
