A Tamil wedding card (கல்யாண பத்திரிகை) online, drawn like a kolam at the door. Rice-flour dots fall on a red-oxide floor, and the guest joins them, line by line, to nadaswaram and thavil. Each loop of the kolam that closes opens one page of the invitation, up to the muhurtham. You send it as one link with your names in it.

A Tamil wedding card the guest draws

The Kalyanam Kolam design opens on a wet red-oxide floor between brass kuthuvilakku lamps, with gopurams behind and jasmine drifting down. Rice-flour dots fall one by one into a pulli grid, and the first dot glows: "Tap a dot to begin". Each tap draws the next line in white flour; a drag from dot to dot draws several. When a loop closes it fills with colour, a puff of flour and jasmine bursts, and that page rises from the floor beside the kolam, on rice paper with a Kanjivaram zari border and a mango-leaf thoranam.

  • Music: an original mangala isai piece in Raga Hamsadhwani and Adi talam, with nadaswaram, thavil, jalra and veena. Each line the guest draws plays the next note on the veena, and each finished loop rings a temple bell.
  • Maps and calendar for each ceremony.
  • A live countdown to the muhurtham, on brass plates.
  • Photos and a film in Tanjore-style gilded frames.
  • RSVP on WhatsApp, with stay and travel notes for guests coming from other cities.
  • A row of small kolams under the board, numbered ௧ to ௮, to jump to any page. The guest can wash the kolam away and draw it again.

The Tamil wedding ceremonies, in order

The sample is a Tamil Iyer wedding in the month of Thai: Shruthi Subramanian of Kanchipuram and Karthik Ramanathan of Mylapore. The pages are Welcome (with the pillaiyar suzhi உ and the shloka), Mappillai & Ponnu, the festivities, the Muhurtham, the Reception, Memories, For our guests and Nandri. The ceremonies are:

  1. Mehendi & Sangeet: henna, old film songs, kolattam with the cousins, bajji and filter coffee.
  2. Vratham & Pandha Kaal Muhurtham: prayers for a smooth wedding, and the first pandhal post tied with mango leaves and turmeric.
  3. Janavasam & Nichayathartham: the groom's procession with nadaswaram and thavil, the lagna patrikai read aloud, and thamboolam trays exchanged.
  4. Kashi Yatra, Maalai Maatral & Oonjal: the umbrella and walking stick, three garland swaps, and the swing.
  5. Muhurtham: kanyadanam, mangalya dharanam to the getti melam, akshathai, and saptapadi.
  6. Reception: a Carnatic concert and a banana-leaf dinner in Chennai.

Rename, remove or add any of them, for an Iyengar, Chettiar, Mudaliar or any other Tamil family's order of rites.

Yes. It can show up to three languages, like Tamil, English and Hindi, and guests switch with one tap. The Tamil labels on each page, like முகூர்த்தம் and நன்றி, stay in Tamil in every language.

Can we add Nalangu or Pallikai as separate ceremonies?

Yes. Every ceremony gets its own date, time, venue, Google Maps link and dress code, like "Kanjivaram silk and veshti". The ones before the muhurtham sit together on one page, and guests tap each one to open it.

Does it suit a Telugu or Kannada wedding?

Yes, it works as a South Indian wedding card for any family that draws a kolam, muggu or rangoli at the door. The invitation can be in Telugu or Kannada, and the text then calls it ముగ్గు or ರಂಗೋಲಿ.

How do guests open it on WhatsApp?

You send one link. It opens in the phone browser with nothing to download, and guests come back to it for the mandapam, the map and the muhurtham time.
