An Odia wedding card dealt as Ganjappa
The Ganjappa design starts on a carved wooden table with a round red lacquer box, two fish and ଶୁଭ ବିବାହ painted on its lid. The guest taps to open it. The lid is lifted off, the cards fly out one by one onto a cloth with a Sambalpuri pasapali border, and the stack springs open into a fan.
Guests drag the fan sideways to turn it, and drag up or down to open or close it. A tap on the front card lifts it out, turns it over and opens it as a reading card of cream patta in a red and black frame, in the manner of pattachitra. Swipe it away and the next card comes in. Each card face has its own painted motif (kalasha, the two fish, shankha, chakra, gaja, padma, deepa and a parrot with a letter), its Odia name and its number in Odia numerals.
- Eight cards: the invitation, bara and kanya with their families, the rituals before the lagna, the bibaha, the rituals after it, photos and a film, notes for guests, and your reply.
- A live countdown to the lagna on the bibaha card.
- Directions and add to calendar for each ritual, with its dress code in colour swatches.
- RSVP on WhatsApp to the number you choose.
- No music: only the soft sounds of the box and the cards being dealt and turned.
The Odia bahaghara rituals, in order
The sample is Ipsita Mohapatra of Puri and Soumya Ranjan Panda of Cuttack, married by the sea in Puri. Their cards hold these:
- Jwain Anukula (ଜ୍ୱାଇଁ ଅନୁକୂଳ): the bride’s father brings the first invitation to the groom’s home, with a new dhoti and chhena sweets.
- Mangana (ମଙ୍ଗନ): seven married women grind fresh turmeric for the bride’s bath.
- Bara Jatri (ବରଯାତ୍ରୀ): the groom arrives with a brass band and changu drums, and the bride’s mother welcomes him at the gate.
- Hata Ganthi & Saptapadi (ହାତଗଣ୍ଠି): the hands tied with a sacred thread, then seven steps around the fire.
- Chauthi (ଚଉଠି): the couple’s puja on the fourth day.
- Ashirbad (ଆଶୀର୍ବାଦ): a reception with an Odia bhoji of dalma, chhena poda and khiri.
Rename, remove or add any of them. The dress codes can name your own weaves, like Khandua, Bomkai or Sambalpuri.
