A nikah invitation you turn like a lantern
The Fanoos Mehfil design is a Lucknowi nikah at night. It opens in a dark room with an unlit brass fanoos and a matchbox. The guest taps to strike the match, the candle lights, the panes glow and the jaali throws its pattern of light across the wall.
The lantern has one glass facet per chapter, each with a cusped jharokha window, Mughal art behind the glass and the chapter's name in Nastaliq. Guests drag to spin it and tap the front facet to open it into a full-screen panel of white chikankari muslin. On a laptop it hangs in an arcade of three cusped arches with marble jaalis.
- Music: an original sarangi alaap in Raag Darbari Kanada, with tabla, harmonium, tanpura and soft qawwali claps. A swarmandal shimmers each time a facet opens.
- The Nikah facet: a live countdown to "Qubool hai", the baraat, the Qazi sahab, the Nikahnama and the chhuhare.
- Every ceremony with its Urdu name, venue, پہناوا (dress code), directions and add to calendar.
- Photos and a film in arched frames, notes for guests, and RSVP on WhatsApp.
The rasmein, from Mangni to Walima
The sample is Mahira Siddiqui of Lucknow and Zayan Ali Khan of Hyderabad. Their invitation has these:
- Mangni: rings in the old Hazratganj house, and the date fixed over sheer and saffron tea.
- Manjha: the bride in yellow, with ubtan of haldi, besan and chandan.
- Mehndi & Sanchaq: the groom's family brings trays of the bridal jora, bangles and mehndi.
- Qawwali Mehfil: harmonium, tabla and Amir Khusrau's kalaam on the lawns.
- Baraat & Nikah: "Qubool hai" three times, the Nikahnama signed before two witnesses.
- Rukhsati: the bride's farewell under duas and rose petals.
- Walima: the groom's family's dinner for the new couple.
Keep, rename or remove any of them, and add your own.
