A wedding card sewn like a phulkari
The Phulkari Vyah design is one bagh cloth on indigo khaddar, made of square patches. It opens with a needle stitching the couple's names letter by letter. The guest taps to pull the thread, the kaleere jingle, and the cloth is drawn up like a curtain.
Guests swipe the cloth left and right. Each patch is a chapter, and as it comes into view a needle sews its motif in darning stitch, row by row, before the words appear. A thread of knots along the top is the index: tap a knot to jump to any patch.
- Music: an original folk tune in Raag Pahadi colours, with algoza, sarangi, dholak, giddha claps and harmonium. No bhangra dhol.
- Every ceremony on its own patch, with its motif: the chunni lattice, the jaggo gagar, chooda and kaleere, the laavan ring.
- Dress codes with colour swatches, and a note for guests, like covering heads at the Gurdwara.
- Directions and add to calendar for each venue, and a live countdown on the Anand Karaj patch.
- Photos and a film, travel and stay notes, and RSVP on WhatsApp.
The Punjabi and Sikh wedding rasams, in order
The sample couple, Simran and Harman, marry in Ludhiana. Their card has these patches:
- Roka & Chunni Chadhai: the groom's mother drapes the bride in a red phulkari chunni, and the first boliyan are sung.
- Mehndi & Jaggo: henna in the winter sun, then the mamis carry a lit gagar through the lanes.
- Maiyan & Chooda: vatna at dawn, the chooda from the mama and the golden kaleere.
- Anand Karaj: the Milni of the two families, then the four Laavan before Sri Guru Granth Sahib, Ardas and Karah Parshad.
- Reception: giddha, a folk band and dinner in Patiala.
Rename them, drop one or add your own, like a Sangeet or the Doli.
